Leona Marie Jensen was born December 6, 1918 to Chris and Ellen (Andersen) Christensen near Tyler, Minnesota. She was baptized at Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler on January 12, 1919, and later confirmed there on May 21, 1933. She attended eight years of country school at District #55. On March 15, 1939 she married Martin Jensen in Tyler, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with one son and 59 years of life together. The couple farmed in the Russell and Tyler area, and retired to Florence in 1974. Leona then worked for a time at Marshall Produce in Marshall, Minnesota. Martin died in 1998, and Leona remained a resident of Florence. In 2002 she moved to Sunrise Manor Nursing Home in Tyler, where she died on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the age of 89 years, 10 months, and 20 days.

Leona was a member of Danebod Lutheran Church where she belonged to the women’s group. She enjoyed crocheting, baking, and caring for her flower and vegetable gardens. She was a welcoming and generous person. Every stray dog and cat was fed and loved and encouraged to stay, and many did. She generously shared from her garden, and would bake dozens of batches of Christmas cookies to share. She was fond of showing her love by feeding folks, and enjoying coffee and talk around the kitchen table.

Leona is lovingly remembered by her son, Marlin Jensen of Tyler; by three brothers: Clarence Christensen and his wife Opal of Tyler, Harvey Christensen of Tyler, and Virgil Christensen and his wife Boots of Faribault, Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin; her parents; and one brother, who died in childhood.
